 The story has been thought to be based on the life of Alexander Selkirk.  The island in the real story is renamed Robinson Crusoe Island. The book has influenced many other creative adaptations books, films, comics, animations, poems etc.. Robinson Crusoe marked the beginning of realistic fiction as a literary genre.
